Calico Potatoes and Calico Dreams
I can hardly think of a better time to go to a theme park than Memorial Day. And yet, I can hardly think of a worse time to go to a theme park than this particular Memorial Day. So as we all are listening to the experts and doing our part by staying at home, how do we get a little of that theme park experience? Well, sometimes you have to create it yourself. Grab your biggest cast iron skillet, y'all, 'cause we're making Silver Dollar City's Calico Potatoes!
Normally, this not-to-be-missed treat can be had at Hatfield's Potato Patch, and seriously, if you're a first-timer to Silver Dollar City, this should be a priority for you. Fortunately, Silver Dollar City was kind enough to share the recipe publicly as a bit of quarantine relief, so we tried our hand at it. It's a simple recipe made from simple ingredients, so it's easy to get close to the real thing.
The recipe is very easy to follow. We got out our largest cast iron skillet (16" was big enough for a family of 5). We started with the potatoes.
Once the potatoes were starting to soften, we added the other ingredients.
It really just takes a lot of watching and turning, which is exactly what the fine folks at Hatfield's Tater Patch are doing. The whole process took about 20 minutes, as advertised. When it was done, I think you'll agree, it looked remarkably like the real thing:
It doesn't have that good, good smoky flavour that comes from the open-air cooking, but it hit the spot until we can get back to Silver Dollar City again. So grab your best mask, pick up some simple ingredients at the grocery store, and come on back home and give this recipe a shot. It's as close to the Tater Patch as you can get!
